Monoprints:
Inspiration: Only when technique becomes second nature does the opportunity for truly
free expression manifest. My art reflects the attempt to replicate in
shape and color a cohesion of the mind’s conscious and unconscious
thoughts and feelings. While colors are selected consciously, form and
action emerge during the process. Often this process surprises the artist
with unexpected discoveries. For me printmaking is an act of communion
with my inner self. Michelangelo spoke of finding the statue in the marble.
It is the same for me. The printmaking process becomes the artistic act.
For me a work of art is born of the love affair between hand and eye with
inks, color and the zinc plate. There is nothing more exciting than marrying
fine paper to a finished plate, running them through the press, then carefully
‘pulling’ the paper away and making the discovery of a new
print.
Technique: These monoprints are created on
metal plates which serve as the ‘canvas’ on which the artist
paints with inks. Once pulled, the prints may be further worked into with
dyes, pencil, and oil pastels. They are expressions of joy which emerge
from a base tone as forms and winding colors intricately describing a
flow of motion and exuberant emotion.
Paintings:
These are the faces of people I have drawn and painted periodically throughout
my life. Some have been abstract, some more realistic. My goal has been
to reflect a variety of moods and personalities. They are my mind’s
family, characters who emerge as the painting unfolds. They are always
a surprise.
